Tales Big and Small: Encouraging Storytelling for All Learners in Our Classrooms

Telling and listening to stories is one of the most fundamental reasons for human communication, whether we are sharing information about our daily lives or creating fantastic fictional worlds. In this workshop, we explore how encouraging storytelling in the English language classroom can provide students with genuine, meaningful, and motivating reasons to talk and listen to each other. We explore strategies, techniques, and attitudes that can make storytelling a key, everyday part of an English language teacher’s toolkit, creating opportunities for learners to become active tellers and listeners of stories, whether big or small. This session aims to support your creativity and experimentation as an educator, providing ideas and some inspiration that may expand and develop your professional practice. It provides practical ideas that you can apply immediately and also some that you may wish to consider and develop over time.
